rain<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">to walk, laugh, run and slip<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">before you awake.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a name=\"_Toc412890118\"><\/a><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Kalli<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0Kalli followed me eight miles<br \/>\nto the market where<br \/>\nanimals were traded like slaves.<br \/>\nCows goats bullocks camels\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Kalli was black beautiful and six<br \/>\nprime age for a water buffalo.<br \/>\nShe was dry. Repelled bulls as if she had decided<br \/>\nnever to go green.<br \/>\nHard to afford, my father decided to sell her.<br \/>\nShe obeyed as I led her by the steel chain,<br \/>\none end in my hand \u00a0the other round her neck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">I was fifteen.<br \/>\nHer nervousness was over<br \/>\nsoon after we entered the market<br \/>\nwhere sellers occupied\u00a0their given spaces<br \/>\nlike matrimonials on a large weekly page. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Kalli sat down with no emotion in her eyes<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">like an ascetic close to nirvana.<br \/>\nI sat stood walked around like a neglected calf.<br \/>\nNobody bought Kalli.<br \/>\nShe followed me 8 miles back home<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">I wasn&#8217;t sure if Father was sad or glad<br \/>\nto see her back.<br \/>\nHe just looked at her<br \/>\nlike a family member<br \/>\nwho had missed the train.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Mustard Flowers<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">If you see an old man<br \/>\nsitting alone <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">at the bus stop<br \/>\nand wonder who he is <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">I can tell you.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">He is my father.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">He is not waiting for a bus or a friend<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">nor is he taking a brief rest before<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">resuming his walk.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">He doesn&#8217;t intend to shop in the<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">nearby stores either<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">he is just sitting there on the bench.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Occasionally he smiles and talks.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">No one listens.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">No body is interested.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">And he doesn&#8217;t seem to care<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">if someone listens or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">A stream of cars, buses, and people<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">flows on the road.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">A river of images, metaphors and<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">similes flows through his head.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">When everything stops<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">at the traffic lights it is midnight<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">back in his village. Morning starts<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">when lights turn green.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">When someone honks his neighbor&#8217;s<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">dog barks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">When a yellow car passes by<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">a thousand mustard flowers<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">bloom in his head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">A tall man passes with his shadow<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">vanishing behind him. My father<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">thinks of Pauli who left his village<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">for Malaya and<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">never came back. font-size: 12pt;\">Playing with Big Numbers<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The human mind\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">is essentially qualitative.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">As you know,<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">we are easily excited by<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">pinks and purples,<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">triangles and circles<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">and we endlessly argue<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">over true and false,<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">right and wrong.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">But quantitative analyses<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">rarely touch our souls.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Numbers were invented mainly<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">by men to trick each other.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">I am almost certain women had<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">nothing to do with them. They<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">had more vital tasks, survival for example,<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">at hand.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">But playing with big numbers<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">could be interesting.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">In fact it could be really fun. It will take<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">14 years to gather<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">the pieces and put them back<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">into one piece.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">On the other hand, \r\nmay be all the\r\ntrillion cries could hit your soul\r\nand nothing would happen.<\/span>\r\n\r\n \r\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Coffee in A Clear Glass Mug<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">It was the first time<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">I made coffee in a clear glass mug.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">It was fun<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">and a bargain.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The gray coffee beans I bought<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">were absolutely fresh,<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">fragrant,<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">and cheap.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">I poured the boiling water with all<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">its bubbles, sounds, and hisses<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">into the mug.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">No color yet.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">I put in a sugar cube<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">and couldn't resist watching<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">the cube slowly dissolve and turn<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">into an irregular shape.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Sweetness traveled<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">to every molecule of water without<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">muddying it,<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">like an affectionate touch of<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">a child's hand traveling to every<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">corner of grandfather's soul.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">It was beautiful.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">I dropped in a few beans of<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">roasted coffee.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Light brown color emerged,<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">turning slightly darker around<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">the beans.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">To my delight a display of<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Grey shades began. The infinite<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">variety of shades between<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">black and white fascinated me.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">A stem of color rose in<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">the center, branching irregularly<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">here and there.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">There were shapes like flowers,<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">and thick dots like coffee fruit.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">It was indeed a branch of<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Arabian coffee with flowers<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">and seeds.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Soon more color rose from<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">the bottom, adding richness and<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">expression to the plant.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">I added a few drops of rum at the<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">side to make it a coffee royal.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The plant trembled, and<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">strangely enough<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">it now looked like a human figure.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Was it a coffee picker<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">from Sri Lanka India or somewhere?<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">It indeed was a coffee picker<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">with reed thin legs,<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">a loin cloth, no shirt and no waist.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">(The likes of which you see<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">sometimes on tv to evoke sympathies<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">in the would-be donors)\u00a0\r\n<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">I picked up the mug and had a<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">small sip. Curiously enough the<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">coffee picker was still there<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">although slightly thinner. After<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">another sip the figure was<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">still recognizable.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Shall I swallow it?<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Why not.
